We have already taken a look at using a hybrid approach when it comes to bespoke software development, but what about using this method for mobile app development too? So before we take a dive into this, let’s explain what a hybrid mobile app actually is. It is defined as a mobile app that is developed once, but can run across multiple platforms – including Android, iOS, Windows etc. This means that gone are the old days where you had to develop two apps – one for Android, and another for iOS.
How Does It Work?
Due to the technology behind a hybrid mobile app, they can therefore be used across multiple mobile platforms. As a hybrid app only needs to be developed once, but can run across several platforms this means overall costs are reduced. The ongoing support and maintenance costs are also fairly low.
Advantages of Hybrid Mobile Apps
In general, there is a lower investment if you opt for a hybrid mobile app as there is no need to develop several versions of the same app. They are often a lot faster to produce too, as they are developed using web technologies, whereas native apps are developed specifically for the platform upon which they will be uploaded to. As there is only one app to maintain, this means hosting and maintenance costs are significantly lower.
Disadvantages of Hybrid Mobile Apps
In comparison with native mobile apps, the features and functions supported by a hybrid app are often limited. As hybrid apps rely on web technologies, which are supported differently on various mobile devices, extra testing is required when developing them. This is because time needs to be spent making sure users receive a consistent experience, no matter what device they are using the app on.
Performance can sometimes be a little bit slower on hybrid mobile apps as they run off the web, rather than the individual operating system of the device they are being used on. This also means that storage options can be limited when comparing hybrid against native apps.
At Lyke we have been developing both native and hybrid mobile apps for many years and are always looking for the next challenge. If you have an idea in mind but aren’t quite sure how to implement it, why not get in touch with our team today and we can start creating together.
